During your examination, we'll do dental X-rays to assess the current state of your teeth, gums, and mouth. These X-rays are able to detect problems such as tooth decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. They also allow us to visualize the position of teeth and roots. In our gum disease evaluation, we check the gums and bones around the teeth to screen for signs of periodontal disease. We also palpate the neck, lips, face, tongue, throat, gums, and tissues to screen for oral cancer. When we look at your teeth, we'll examine the surface of every tooth with special dental instruments to check for decay. If you have current fillings, crowns, or other work, we'll examine the status and health of those restorations as well.
